How many songs have been written about The One That Got Away? A million? And yet, Model Kit keeps releasing catchy 80's-inflected gems that deftly explore the topic. Their shiny new track--"Right Before Your Eyes"--finds the self-produced duo achieving a delicate balance between authentic emotion and melodrama, keeping it all moving with steady beats, acoustic guitar, and Revell and 'Zacto's often intertwined and harmonized vocals. Even through the dark storytelling we get infectious keyboard riffs on a bed of bright acoustic strumming and synth pads. The idea when composing and producing the track was to fit all the end-to-end tension and release of a relationship into one four minute micro-drama. And yes, perhaps contrary to current trends the song starts humbly, continuing to build to the anthemic and heartbreaking chorus. Sad, perhaps. Danceable, absolutely.
